A Game of Detection
19 AW
The inspiration for Autumn/Winter 2019 collection “The Game of Detection” began with a story of detection. The story begins on a train, with dinosaur fossils, and a buyer, a painter, a gambler, a thief, a police, also a record keeper back from the future attempting to solve the mystery but is unable to intervene. There are also mysterious ladies onboard, who appear to be preparing for a big event, and a diagram detailing the relationships between the persons of interest that are studied by both police and detective.

The elements used to pay tribute to the classic detective novels are hidden in the prints and jacquard materials of the designs, including opened letters, black cats, train tracks, playing cards, pipes, chess pieces, puzzles, pocket-watches, flowers, chocolate and lamb. The detective story still includes the elements that Apu Jan likes to express on his clothing, such as time, time travel, fantasy, dinosaur fossils, fantastic creatures, flowers, keys and open pages. APUJAN, who launches new development fabrics every season, continues to test many different types of fabric development, such as digital embroidery, semi 3-D jacquard fabric and delicate knitted jacquard, which have been paired with pure wool, pure silk, pure cotton and other yarns.

The show featured original music which has been produced by APUJAN’s music director –DJ QuestionMark (Chi-Shuan Ying). This season’s score will feature suspenseful, theatrical and minimalistic sounds, drawn from genres ranging from New Classical and Jazz to Experimental Music. Many sound-design pieces include the noises of crowd and trains, have been specially composed to echo the elements present in the print patterns, and different arrangements within the tracks mirror the stories hidden in the clothes’ designs. The catwalk show was accompanied by live music performed by London-based pianist, Belle Chen, double-bassist Refa Wang (Chun-Ting Wang) and flutist DJ QuestionMark.
